Why is West Ham's jersey very similar to Aston Villa's?

I'm not English or from the UK but I follow the premier league, so pardon the ignorance in the history of the two clubs but I find their jerseys or kits very similar to each other. Has this been the case ever since the two originated? Or did one copy the other?
