Why do people say Filipinos with white skin have Spanish ancestery?

people are ignorant and like to ume things. They say the same thing about light skinned mexicans. I had once had the "pleasure" of a white person call me a "white mexican" without knowing my ancestry or heritage at all. I was like, "wow, I'm White?? Thanks, I never knew that..." uggh. T_T
