Why were human footprints found in rock that was supposedly more than 200 millions of years old?

They have been found in the Carboniferous era, which is supposed to be 250 millions years old. I thought humans did not evolve until 2 to 3 millions years ago. Anyone care to explain this? This can be found in Scientific American, January 1940, p.14
